Victim Recovers $78K from Investment Scam
This case is one of the recent successful fraud recovery cases handled by our firm. The case involves online investment fraud / fake cryptocurrency trading platforms / telecom-induced fund transfers. Through cross-border legal cooperation and blockchain fund tracking, we successfully identified the flow of the involved funds and assisted the client in recovering the majority of the losses.
Williams & Connolly is committed to providing victims with professional, fast, and efficient legal support to safeguard our clients’ legitimate rights and interests, helping them regain trust and financial security.
James, a 62-year-old father of five, fell victim to two elaborate online scams, losing thousands of pounds. Fortunately, our law firm successfully recovered £78,699 for this client.
How the First Online Investment Scam Happened
James, the manager of a building renovation company, saw a cryptocurrency advertisement on Facebook claiming that an investment of just £250 could yield substantial monthly income. At the time, Bitcoin investment was all the rage, endorsed by celebrities like Elon Musk, and James became very interested, entering his personal details for more information.
A few days later, James received a contact from a scammer posing as someone working at an investment company. The scammer was very professional, explaining the investment opportunity in detail and giving James a few days to consider.
After conducting due diligence and research on the company, James decided to take the plunge and created his own trading account. He initially invested a few hundred pounds as advertised, but the scammer quickly explained that he needed to invest more money to see profits grow.
Over several weeks, the scammers pressured James to take out multiple loans, one of which was from his company, totaling approximately £60,000. The scammers assured James that investment profits would be enough to repay the loans, with a considerable amount remaining.
The scammers further deceived James, convincing him that Bitcoin had crashed and that he needed to pay a fee to retrieve his funds. James complied and tried to contact the scammers but received no response. It was then that James realized he had been scammed.
How the Second "Recovery" Scam Occurred
Despite his losses, James contacted a company he believed to be a legitimate fraud recovery agency called "Fiscalstrails." This company told James they could definitely recover his money and bring the scammers to court. James was overjoyed.
The scammers explained to James that he needed to pay an additional fee to retrieve his funds. Eager for justice, James paid the fee, unaware that he had been scammed again.
Recovering Money from an Online Investment Scam
After experiencing two elaborate scams, James was distraught. As the sole breadwinner of his family, he was under immense pressure, forced to work overtime to try and recoup his losses.
James's business also suffered, as he had partially funded the scam through business loans. As a result, James found himself mired in deeper debt, which, he says, kept him up at night and negatively impacted his personal life.
Despite James's large loans, his bank—NatWest Bank—never intervened. James believed his bank had failed in its obligation to protect him from fraud. He then decided to contact our law firm. Our firm specializes in fraud and deception cases and operates on a no-success-no-fee basis, meaning James would gain everything.
This case is particularly heartbreaking because our clients not only fell victim to a sophisticated cryptocurrency scam but also to a subsequent "recovery" scam. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for scammers to impersonate professional advisors, claiming they can recover funds with just an upfront fee. Worse still, in most cases, these opportunistic scammers target already vulnerable victims again. Fortunately, James later found the law firm Williams & Connolly, who helped him recover his funds. For others seeking help after falling victim to online scams, I advise avoiding anyone asking for upfront payments. We operate on a "no success, no fee" principle, so contacting us will absolutely not cost you anything.
